GENERAL GUIDANCE ON USING VIDEOSTUDIO
Please note that specific instructions relating to the
individual programs is available if you select the program,
then click INFORMATION. The same specific information is
available from within the program itself.
NEW USERS
Welcome to VideoStudio! There is a lot to explore, so take
your time and experiment with the features, and get used to
their operation, so when the time comes to add effects and
titles to your videos, you will know what is available, where
to find it, and how it works. But...
Before using VideoStudio please make sure that you have:
(1) Write-protected the ORIGINAL disks
(2) Set the Real-Time clock
(3) Made back-up and working copies of VS1 and VS2
(4) Sufficient hardware (1Mb RAM and 2 drives)
(5) The correct VERSION of the software to suit your machine.
(6) Noted the SERIAL NUMBER for your security and registration.
(the serial number appears at the top of the entry screen)
Once you are using a working copy, you can experiment freely
without danger of damaging anything.
THE DISKS
VS1 contains the fonts, and is never written to (so your working
VS1 may be write-protected). The VS2 contains the programs and
your work. This disk must be write-enabled (sliding tab closed).
You should periodically make a copy of your working VS2 to make sure
that your work is safe even if the dog eats the other disk.
TITLING
There are three main types of video tilling software, differing in
the way that the text is edited:
(1) Bitmap Editors (a single screen dump, e.g. D-Paint, TV*Text)
(2) Scriptfile Autolayout editors (e.g. SpeedText)
(3) WYSIWYG multipage vector file systems (e.g. CAPTOR)
Each type has its own strengths, depending on the type of work in
hand.
Type (1) is excellent for graphics of unlimited complexity. Each page
is saved independently, as an IFF. D-Paint (and, if you wish CAPTOR)
can create files in this form. They use much diskspace, and cannot be
post-edited (the words and font information is not saved, and pages and
layouts cannot be 'cloned').
Type (2) is especially suited to tasks with many pages of similar form
taking the minimum time to prepare. The features are resticted, but
this type is the quickest and easiest to use. Text is entered in a
continuous script.
Type (3) allows you maximum flexibilty of layout and format of each
page separately. Pages are still saved in a compact single file, so
long sequences are still possible, unlike (1). Bitmaps may be included,
where necessary, e.g. logos abd backgrounds. Pages may be either
automatically or manually laid out. Preparation time is longer than
with (2) but shorter than (1).
As you understand the distinction between these types, VideoStudio
allows you to choose which is most suitable for the task you have
in mind.
Try running the many demo jobs provided, and try using REPLICA,
just changing the words, to create your own sequences.
HOW TO COPY YOUR DISKS
First of all, make sure the disk you wish to copy is write-protected.
Boot your computer with a Workbench disk, and open the Shell widow.
Type into the window:
DISKCOPY DF0: TO DF1:
(exactly) then press <ENTER>
Now insert the ORIGINAL, and WRITE-PROTECTED disk into DF0:
(the internal drive), and a blank disk into DF1: (the external
drive). Now press <ENTER> again. When the copying is complete,
label the disk. Repeat as necessary.
FAULT DIAGNOSIS - most common problems
PROBLEM: Message INSERT VS1/VS2 appears despite vs1/2 present.
CAUSE: Another method of copying has been used.
REMEDY: Rename disks ensuring no spaces are in the name.
PROBLEM: Message NOT ENOUGH (CHIP or RAM) MEMORY
REMEDY: Try a fresh boot
Close as many workbench windows as possible
Avoid functions requiring more memory (Captor)
Remove unnecessary peripherals
Try using VS autostart (bypassing Workbench) from link
Expand RAM
PROBLEM: Message VS2 is full
REMEDY: Delete unnecessary files
Make fresh VS2 copy
Make TITLING-ONLY VS2 workdisk
PROBLEM: Program fails to load after double clicking icon.
REMEDY: Check initial workbench screen indicates 780,000 RAM min.
Check memory expansion is working. (Often faulty)
PROBLEM: Real-Time clock cannot be permanently set.
REMEDY: Fit memory expansion A501 with (working!) real-time clock.
PROBLEM: Drawing is slow or messy (esp TIMEFUNCTIONS)
REMEDY: Do not run other processes requiring CPU time
PROBLEM: Timefunctions run at half-speed (with G2 genlock on A500)
REMEDY: Remove G2 and if fault so corrected, speak to G2 (not ZVP).
